What to do in Athens this September

August 23, 2018

Welcome to Athens! Summer is almost gone but the vibe of the city is still going strong. Enjoy this cool and full of entertainment, flavor, music and sightseeing month. The streets await!

Sundays at the University History Museum

The Athens University History Museum is housed in the building known as Kleanthis’ Residence or The Old University. The building dates before the 18th Century, establishing it as one of the very few surviving buildings from the pre-Otto period. It may be identified with a house depicted in a painting of Athens by J. Carrey, who visited the city in 1674 as Charles – Marie - François Olier, Marquis de Nointel’s painter.

The building was purchased in 1831 by Stamatios Kleanthis and Edward Schaubert who were the first to undertake the urban planning of the city of Athens.

On the first Sunday of each month, the Athens “University History Museum” is open to the public from 11.00 until 16.00.

Entrance is free.

Paul Chan: Odysseus and the bathers

NEON presents an exhibition of New York-based artist Paul Chan in Athens, Greece at the Museum of Cycladic Art where he presents a body of new and recent works, which he calls “breathers” and “bathers”. Each figure is composed of a fabric “body” designed by Chan and attached to specially modified fans. The Museum of Cycladic Art is a compelling setting for these works, which are heavily indebted to ancient Greek philosophy. Artists have explored the motif of the “bather” throughout history.

The exhibition is accompanied by a full-colour Greek/English catalogue.

Every Saturday 12.00 – 13.00, free guided tours for children age 6 to 12 will take place at the exhibition Paul Chan | Odysseus and the Bathers, organized by NEON. The guided tours will be held in Greek on a first come – first served basis.
